Salt’s true origin traces back to a hidden group within the Aqua Homo — a branch that evolved differently from the rest. While most Aqua Homo were adapted to deep-water environments, this small group was more tied to the coastlines and rivers, where land and sea meet. They had stronger limbs, lungs that worked extremely well above water, and minds that were more curious about the surface world. These traits were the earliest signs of divergence — a biological pull toward the land.
Salt was born among them.
But the problem was that her people were seen as a threat by the deeper clans of the Aqua Homo. They were too close to the land, too comfortable near humans, and too open-minded about crossing boundaries. In the old laws of the Aqua Homo, anyone who sought the land was disloyal to the ocean. The sea demanded devotion. It demanded that its people remain in its depths. Those who strayed were marked as traitors or outcasts.
The main conflict of War Between, which is anchored in a sizzling chemistry between Tovey and Mbatha-Raw (even though the latter spends her entire time in the series standing in one spot being somewhat menacing), is rooted in conveying a sense of realism the parent show doesn't always have the time to really dig into. There is plenty of time for the show to devolve into a more Doctor Who-like plot of a monster invasion.
