Today I’m going to be giving you a quick overview on the broken link checker plugin for WordPress. This is a great plugin to detect broken links that may be on your site which can become a bit of a problem if you have a site that has been up for years or even months.

But assuming that you do know how, this is going to start from the plugin already having been installed.

Once you’ve installed it, make sure it is also activated. As you can see here, we already do have it activated. Then go to tools on your toolbar on your left-hand side and scroll down to broken links. The plugin will take your straight to a list of the links that it thinks are broken so as you can see here there’s a broken link and its marked as broken because there’s actually a space in the URL itself.

It’s also going to give you a rundown of what the link is linked to as well as the page that its on. So, if I open this page in a new tab here, and I scroll down a little bit, you’ll see the link right here. And when I click it, nothing happens because it doesn’t work.

So, I’m going to go ahead and hover over it and click the unlink button. It’s going to ask you if you’re sure you want to remove it; Click okay and then it removes it for you. If you come back to the page the broken link was on and do a quick refresh, you’ll see that link has actually been removed from the page.

This is a good practice to get into if you have a site that’s a bit older and you have links that may not be working anymore. It’s never good to have broken links on your site. You can check this once a month or even once a quarter. It can greatly help the user experience on your website.
