This time-lapse should answer a lot of questions to those growing orchids, such as how long does the spiking take, where does a spike develop and what does it look like, how do the appearance of spikes look in comparison to roots, along with spike training (although I may have been able to do that better for a better cascading effect). There are not many orchid time-lapses that show the entire growth from start to finish, most I have seen only focus on the blooming.
I have had the two larger orchids for about 3 years, and the smaller one for 2 years. I live in Covington, KY, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. The orchids have spiked in the fall and bloomed in the late winter yearly since I have gotten them.
I water them on a weekly basis by taking all three orchids and soaking the roots for 15 minutes in water in the kitchen sink and then fully let the water drain out which seems to have done them well. I re-potted the two larger orchids during last summer before the spikes came in.
Some info:
Timeline 9-25-2019 to 4-26-2020, so just over 7 months.
Time-lapse is 1 frame per two hours while capturing spiking, changed to 1 frame per hour on 2-10-2020 leading up to and during blooming.
2,306 frames make up this 1 minute, 16 second time-lapse.
I had captured night frames too that were done with the camera's infrared, but I stripped them out since it gave the time lapse an annoying strobing effect.
