After the first wave of lightning storms hit the Bay Area, moisture went on to feed strong afternoon and evening thunderstorms on the east side of the Sierra Nevadas helped by orographic lift. The Beach Fire, burning sagebrush, was sparked by lightning south of Mono Lake and reached 3,780 acres before being contained on August 28. Burning brush scorched a small portion of tufa, limestone rock towers formed underwater where calcium-rich freshwater springs meet carbonate-rich water to precipitate as calcium carbonate.
