Sadly, bikes don’t ride themsleves. If you want to get the miles in it sometimes means having to get out and ride when you’d rather be flopped out on the sofa. Here are five tips to get you motivated!
One: Sign up for an event. Committing to a long sportive or Gran Fondo ride usually means that you need to put in a fair bit of training to stand any hope of completing the distance. They also aren't cheap: thinking about how much of your heard earned cash you just shelled out for the privilege, should also give you a bit of a kick.
In a similar vein you could also offer to do the ride for charity. That way, you aren’t just letting yourself down if you don’t finish. And if that isn’t enough, why not get on to social media and tell all your on-line chums about it. Then if you don’t finish you’ll look like a tight fisted muppet.
Two: Join a club. Riding with others is always far more enjoyable. Not only does the actual riding seem a little easier, but your cycling chums can offer friendly encouragement on the days when you lack a bit of get up and go. (Text visual- you riding or hiding you lazy bastard?)
Three: Form a habit. Apparently we only need to do something about twenty times for it to become a habit. If this is correct, you only need to go for a ride at the same time every day for about three weeks. Most of the time, the hardest part of a ride is getting your sorry arse out of the front door. If you do this bit on some kind of auto pilot, the ride itself should be relatively easy.
Four: The Carrot. Promising yourself a little treat can work wonders. It can be a slice of cake at the end of a ride, some kind of gift after series of rides or even something big like a new bike. Actually if you promise yourself a new bike, I’ll go out and ride it for you.
Five: The Stick. Find a partner and add a bit of friendly competition to your training. You could up the ante by giving small prizes for achievements or even forfeits- the more embarrassing the better- for the person who has ridden the shortest weekly distance.
