In the 1960s, Jacob Ayuiu Apech Herjok left his home village to join his uncle in Bahr el Ghazal. While living in Yirol and Tonj, he enrolled in lower primary school, but his education was soon disrupted by the Anyanya One war. As a young man, he felt a deep sense of duty to his people and was compelled to join the liberation movement, a decision that would take him on an extraordinary journey across multiple countries in search of both freedom and knowledge.

Leaving South Sudan, Ayuiu and his colleagues embarked on a gruelling trek to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), where they reached an Anyanya camp and were warmly received. However, their senior leaders soon realised that the movement needed educated minds as much as soldiers. A decision was made—Ayuiu and his peers would pursue education rather than take up arms.

Under the sponsorship of the World Council of Churches, Ayuiu was given the opportunity to continue his studies abroad. He initially wished to study in Ghana, but his request was denied due to concerns over Ghana’s alleged ties to communism. Instead, he was sent to Nigeria.

However, just as he began his education in Nigeria, the Biafra war broke out, once again disrupting his studies. Forced to flee, Ayuiu moved to Cameroon to continue his education. Later, he relocated to Liberia, where he earned his first degree in Mathematics. His academic journey did not stop there—he later travelled to the United States in the 1970s, where he successfully completed his master’s and postgraduate studies.

Determined to contribute to the future of his homeland, Ayuiu returned to South Sudan to work. However, the escalation of the South-North war forced him to leave once again, this time settling in Australia.

Today, Ayuiu is unwell, but his story of resilience, determination, and sacrifice remains as powerful as ever. His journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit—a tale of war, displacement, education, and triumph against all odds.
