“How Great Thou Art” is one of the most beloved Christian hymns worldwide, known for its majestic melody and its powerful focus on the greatness of God revealed in creation, redemption, and eternity. The hymn builds verse by verse, beginning with awe at God’s handiwork in nature, moving to gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice, and culminating in joyful anticipation of Christ’s return. Its soaring refrain—“Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art!”—invites both personal reflection and congregational praise, which is why it has remained a staple in churches, gospel concerts, and hymnals for generations.
The song’s origins trace back to 1885, when Carl Boberg, a Swedish pastor and poet, wrote a poem titled “O Store Gud” after experiencing a thunderstorm followed by calm, clear weather. The poem was later set to a Swedish folk melody and translated into several languages. The English version most familiar today was shaped largely by Stuart K. Hine, a British missionary, who translated and expanded the hymn while serving in Eastern Europe in the mid-20th century. Hine added verses emphasizing Christ’s atonement and second coming, giving the hymn its full theological breadth. It gained massive popularity in the United States after being sung by George Beverly Shea at Billy Graham crusades and later recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley, whose rendition introduced it to an even wider audience.
Biblically, “How Great Thou Art” draws from numerous passages that celebrate God’s power and majesty. The opening verse reflects Psalm 8:3–4 and Psalm 19:1, which speak of the heavens declaring the glory of God. The verse about Christ’s sacrifice echoes John 3:16, Romans 5:8, and Isaiah 53:5, emphasizing redemption through the cross. The final verse points to 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 and Revelation 22:12, looking forward to Christ’s return and eternal worship. Altogether, the hymn serves as a musical testimony that connects creation, salvation, and hope, making it a timeless declaration of faith.
James Sego began singing as a young teenager with his brother and sister in 1941 as he Sego Family. After meeting and marrying Naomi Easters, James Sego and his group (the Sego Brothers) often featured Naomi. Eventually the group name was updated to the Sego Brothers and Naomi in 1958 when Naomi joined the group as a permanent member. I've made it no secret that Naomi and the Segos, in any of their forms, is my favorite group of all time! This is just another example of why.
Verse 1:
O Lord my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works
Thy hands have made,
I see the stars,
I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy pow'r throughout
The universe displayed!
Chorus:
Then sings my soul,
My Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art,
How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul,
My Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art,
How great Thou art!
Verse 2:
When Christ shall come
With shout of acclamation
And take me home,
What joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow
In humble adoration
And there proclaim,
My God, how great Thou art!
