Spike Lee had a Louisville Slugger with Wim Wenders name on it after Do The Right Thing shockingly lost the Palme d'Or to Sex, Lies, and Videotape at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989 despite widespread critical acclaim and audience enthusiasm.
Wenders, the director of Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire, was the Jury President that year and Lee heard from jury members Sally Field and Héctor Babenco that Wenders was directly opposed to Do The Right Thing winning the Palme because, in part, he felt that protagonist Mookie (portrayed by Lee) was "unheroic."
Do The Right Thing ended up winning nothing at Cannes that year and was also snubbed at the Oscars, receiving only two nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Danny Aiello). It lost both. Driving Miss Daisy ended up winning Best Picture that year and Oliver Stone won Best Director for Born on the Fourth of July.
In a 2021 critics poll conducted by World of Reel, Do The Right Thing was selected as the Best Movie of the 1980s.
