As authoritarianism threatens democracy, human rights, and the well-being of the most vulnerable, how can we take refuge in mindfulness and compassionate resistance? Drawing from the Buddha’s teachings on tyranny and Thich Nhat Hanh’s lifelong work for peace, Brother Phap Luu responds to the deep concerns of many who fear for their families, their communities, and the future of our world.
This Dharma talk explores the Seven Practices of No Regression—principles the Buddha taught when King Ajatashatru sought to conquer the Vajji people. These practices sustained the Vajji’s freedom and offer us guidance today. Looking also at insights from On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder, Brother Phap Luu reminds us that true freedom is not just political but also an inner liberation from fear.
At a time when institutions are being dismantled and 1930s Germany warns us of what happens when fear renders us silent, we can find strength in Beloved Community to resist obeying repressive regimes in advance. We must rebuild networks of trust in our communities—not just for ourselves, but for future generations. The path of mindfulness is not a retreat from the world but an engaged way of being fully present, discerning, and fearless.
