Vitamin A that exists as retinal retinol or retinoic acid, used in sight and cell differentiation. It can treat measles, and acute promyelocytic leukemia, and severe cystic acne (isotretinoin). A deficiency may cause corneal squamous metaplasia, night blindness (nyctalopia), dry skin (xerosis cutis), bitot spots composed of keratin, and degradation of the cornea (keratomalacia). Acute toxicity may lead to nausea, vomiting, vertigo, and blurred vision. Chronic toxicity leads to alopecia, dry skin, hepatotoxicity, enlargement, arthralgia, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Vitamin A in large doses is a teratogen that can cause a cleft palate, and cardiac abnormalities.
