Is Earning A PhD Really Hard? The Brutal Truth Behind Pursuing A Doctorate

Описание: Getting a PhD is not like traditional work where are you were doing physical labor or you are managing or part of a complex social network. These types of tasks are physically demanding or emotionally demanding because you’re interacting with many people but regular basis.

Rather, doing a PhD and becoming an academic is a lot more emotionally or intellectually demanding which makes it difficult to stay motivated during your PhD. There are several factors that come into play:

1. Competition in the global environment. PhD’s have to compete with other people around the world. If there is someone else that is outranking them in publications, they will know all the time.

2. Transparency of your productivity. Everybody gets to see what your productivity is in an open manner by looking at your number of paper publications. Everybody sees what you are doing, and this can make it difficult to stay motivated as a PhD.

3. Uncertainty or ambiguity of doing the right thing. It’s often difficult to know what you should do during your PhD or whether you’re doing the right thing. Often you have to guess at the best course of action during your PhD, and you don't want to make a mistake.

How do you deal with PhD difficulties? To deal with these difficulties as a PhD, I’d recommend for you to think of yourself as an entrepreneur where you are building your life around yourself. You choose to build your life and what you wanted to be in 5 to 10 years, and work your way towards that goal.
