It remains fun, but in recent years the spectakel has lost a great deal of its mysterious, mystical, mythical, historical and religious qualities (a parody on and a children's version of a forerunner of The Last Judgment, see the Bible and paintings by the Flemish Hans Memling (Bruges) and Lucas van Leyden, in Museum de Lakenhal in, yes, Leiden). So it has lost quite a bit of cheerful seriousness. Not to forget, the aesthetics. I hope the old Dutch men with white beards don't start complaining that Sinterklaas might have a stain on him, in the coming years.

Het blijft leuk, maar het spektakel heeft de afgelopen jaren op mysterieus, mystiek, mytisch, historisch en religieus gebied (als parodie op en kinderversie van een voorbode van Het Laatste Oordeel, zie de Bijbel en schilderijen van de Vlaming Hans Memling (Brugge) en Lucas van Leyden, in Museum de Lakenhal in, jawel, Leiden) een flinke veer gelaten. Het heeft dus nogal aan vrolijke ernst ingeboet. En niet te vergeten, de esthetiek. Wat is er eigenlijk gebeurd met die UNESCO nominatie als immaterieel cultureel werelderfgoed? Is het plan getorpedeerd door een stelletje buitenlanders, omdat die er niets van begrepen?
