In this video, I’ll be catching up with Tante Anna, who is nearly 90 years old. Born in the former Dutch East Indies to a Dutch father and an indigenous Javanese mother, her story is both fascinating and poignant. Our conversation will be in both Dutch and English, but I encourage you to pay special attention to PETJOH—a unique language that blends Dutch, Javanese, Malay, and Betawi. This language was commonly spoken during the Dutch East Indies era and is still used by a few elderly Indos like Tante Anna today.
Tante Anna will share her experiences from her younger years, recounting how she and her mother managed to evade confinement in Japanese prison camps during the occupation of the Dutch East Indies from 1942 to 1945. Tragically, her father was captured and sent to a labor camp, while her older sister was taken by the Japanese to become a comfort woman. The estimated 2 million Dutch people with roots in the archipelago are descendants of displaced Indo-Europeans, Chinese, Moluccans, Indo-Africans, Papuans, Totoks(Dutch born and raised in the DEI) and secured Indonesians. Despite these harrowing memories, Tante Anna exudes a remarkable sense of humor that shines through our conversation.
