Opportunities are everywhere but if you’re the kind of person who seems to get missed by them, here are some ways you can change that to attract more opportunities into your life.

Start by allowing yourself to get out of your comfort zone. So often, we hem ourselves in and the best opportunities seem to involve too much of a stretch. Often because they involve unfamiliar territory.

Challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone more often, especially if your default mode is to hide in your own protective shell.

Start small – things that feel do-able but would be a bit of a push – and work up to the larger (better) opportunities that at the moment seem completely out of reach. Pushing your boundaries means that they will stretch more each time you do that.

If you’re able to think out of the box, do that more often.

It’s not unusual to think we can’t think out of the box. Again, challenge yourself to do some out of the box thinking – turn your conventional wisdom upside down, ask yourself why certain things have to be done in the generally accepted way. Aim to do this regularly and you’ll start to attract more opportunities just because you’re approaching them differently from your old viewpoint.

Learn more – that doesn’t necessarily mean getting absorbed in text books, there are lots of different ways and things to learn. Learning helps our mind to grow and that, in itself, means your previous boundaries get moved outwards.

Taking up a new hobby can be a good way to learn new things and it can also bring new opportunities with it.

Zig when everyone else is zagging. Going against the tide can be an effort but it can also be relatively unexplored. Which means that when most of the world is looking in one direction and you’re looking the other way, you’ll spot opportunities that almost everyone else is missing.

History is full of people doing that – whether it’s a Walkman for music on-the-go or anything else. Lots of discoveries have been as a result of people just not accepting conventional wisdom.

It doesn’t have to be rocket science – the sandwich was “discovered” when the Earl of Sandwich wanted to stay at the gaming table. There are lots of opportunities available in solving what appears to be blindingly obvious after the event. So if you keep asking yourself “why doesn’t someone do that” there’s an opportunity that probably needs filling.
