There is more than one type of stroke. A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die. The two main categories of stroke are ischemic and hemorrhagic.
An ischemic stroke, the most common type, happens when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel leading to the brain. This blockage deprives brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or leaks, causing bleeding that puts pressure on brain cells and damages them. In addition, a transient ischemic attack (TIA), or "mini-stroke," is a temporary blockage of blood flow that often serves as a warning sign for a future stroke.
