Описание: The Milk Factory is nearing completion
Esbeek's artwork is already fraternizing before the opening

August 2018

A steel construction and a framework of mesh and steel wire, with about fifteen thousand oak planks on top. Add another thirty-five thousand screws and then also the technical ingenuity to let milk flow through the pipes. At the beginning of this year, a construction was erected at d'n Beerendijk in Esbeek that increasingly took on the shape of a super-sized cow. A large part of all the work was done by about 65 volunteers, from young to old, under the supervision of the organization Park & Schotel. Eventually, Esbeek will get an innovative work of art on the Andreas Schotel walking and art route. The construction is nearing completion, and the opening will take place on September 16.
Whether you arrive from the N269 and drive past the timber trade from Van Dal to d'n Beerendijk, or you come from Esbeek, with the church tower at your back. The giant cow 'De Melkfabriek' looms high in front of you. With a length of fifteen meters and a height of eight meters, it is an unmissable creation.
The animal stands with its mouth to the grass, as cows in the meadow are used to. The mouth of the animal is so large that it can accommodate a human being, and it is no coincidence that this is also the entrance to the interior of the animal.
If you can't believe your eyes on the outside of the work of art, it's even more so on the inside. The makers do not want to show the back of their tongue yet. "Let people come and see for themselves to be surprised," it sounds.
What can not be missed inside are the two large peepholes that give the visitor a view of the surroundings. On the south side, you can see a former dairy farm and the stock of a timber trade, on the north side, the profile of the Esbeek core, with the spire as the centre.
The Milk Factory is more than a static work of art that you can also enter. If it is up to the makers, it is a permanently dynamic work. On the one hand, the dynamics lie in the imagination by seeing the difference between dairy farming in the past and now. In addition to the large animal, which requires little imagination, Han Bolijn, one of the founders who helped carry out the technical calculations, also expects this.
The initiators did not take any chances when creating De Melfabriek. For example, they turned their attention to local entrepreneurs to be informed about the materials to be used.

“If you want to know how you want to apply the wood in an ecological way, it is nice if we can go to the nearby timber trade,” says Bolijn. “They gave us advice and support there, in the end we were allowed to see the planks ourselves, and we received tips about the confirmation.”
The result is that on the outside, there is a seal of oak wooden planks. Due to the overlapping, the rain can be kept out to a large extent.
Another part of the creation is the construction of the large animal. “Of course, it had to be safe,” he explains. “The Reijrink company assisted us in this in a pleasant way. First of all, in making the technical calculations, but then also in manufacturing and installing.”
Opening
In the case of De Melkfabriek, opening the artwork means opening it to the public. From September 16, anyone who wants to can enter for free and for free. The makers emphasize that it is always at your own risk. Everywhere possible, attention is paid to safety, but there are steep stairs to climb, and unexpected things can always happen.
The colossus has now survived its first storm. “Not that we were afraid it would go wrong, but still. Such a large colossus naturally catches a lot of wind," says Hannes Verhoeven.
On 16 September, the Park&Saddle festival is entirely devoted to the cow and its dairy. The slogan is Happen, Tappen en Klap and can be visited completely free of charge from 11:00 am. It takes place - how could it be otherwise - at the artwork itself at D'n Beerendijk.
