On May 9th, a female klipspringer calf was born in the San Diego Zoo's Kopje exhibit. Klipspringers are famous for their rock-climbing and jumping abilities. Like all antelope, their rounded hooves are split down the middle, dividing the hoof into two "toes." But klipspringers also have a pad in the center that acts like a suction cup, allowing them to hop from rock to rock without falling.

Unlike other antelope species, klipspringers have a short and muscular body that enables them to jump up rock walls that are nearly vertical. This gives them an advantage in escaping their predators. Their speckled coat provides camouflage on the rocky kopje, where they often "freeze" for long periods of time to avoid detection.
