I have successfully held Bunker Hill and secured an inspiring victory. Truth be told, it was much needed. For months, since April, we have been beleaguered by every calamity chance could visit. Boston under siege, enemy ships in the harbor, frequent patrols on the streets, food shortages and a lack of supplies. We were so low on ammo I instructed the men to "Wait to shoot until they saw the whites of their eyes." We had almost lost hope.

The day was clear and warm. A good day for artillery. Major Gen. Howe had set up his 12lb cannon on the hill to the northwest, Breeds Hill, and started shelling our lines in short order. To take the pressure off I order my left cavalry to attack their position on the hill as it was unfortified. My right cavalry flanked the British troops approach under tree cover to the east.

The cannon to the east (right) remained a problem and it would take time to reach the 12lb cannon on the hill. This allowed me the time to move our howitzers, additional 12lb cannon and get the troops into better defensive position. We still lost a third of our cannon.

We were attacked head on by the bulk of their infantry. Primarily in a three pronged frontal assault. Troops needed to be moved around, in and out of combat, some routed, but we were able to repel the British advance up the main route of the hill. The we maintained focus, kept moral and held. Against amazing odds. The British seemed endless as we were outnumbered more than two to one. Major General Howe fielded 2200 British Army and we were 1000 Colonial Militia.

As the battle wore on, it seemed neither side had an advantage. This was a welcome surprise. We were hard pressed to survive the initial assaults. We took more and more of their troops, firing down on them with cannon fire and holding strong defensive gunnery lines. Ammunition was starting to
get scarce. Those troops out of ammunition were preparing for melee,
hand to hand combat.

It was then, as the men were starting to tire against the endless onslaught, something happened. The British began to break off, losing their fighting spirit. First those closest to our front lines, then those positioned at cannon or support position, then the rest. God shone down on Boston this day. We get to go home to our families. Ever at your service.
