First Made-in-India Passenger Aircraft: HAL & Russia Join Hands to Build SJ-100 Passenger Jet

In a historic leap for India's aviation industry, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a pact with Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to produce the SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft in India. This marks the first time a complete passenger jet will be entirely manufactured on Indian soil, signalling a major milestone in India's journey toward becoming self-reliant in aircraft manufacturing. HAL will produce UAC's SJ-100 twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft that typically seats up to 103 passengers, for Indian domestic customers. HAL has long partnered with the UAC, mainly by building under license the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet for the Indian Air Force. The standout features of the aircraft include low operating costs and the ability to operate in all climatic zones with temperatures from 45 degrees to minus 55 degrees. The move also aimed at improving short-haul connectivity under the Indian Government's regional air connectivity scheme called UDAN.
