About Pauline Sachse
German violist Pauline Sachse is a versatile and highly regarded chamber musician who has been active on the international music scene for many years. She has collaborated with leading artists including Sabine Meyer, Jörg Widmann, Isabelle Faust, Janine Jansen, Carolin Widmann, Harriet Krijgh, Lauma Skride and Martin Helmchen. She has also performed with ensembles such as the Armida Quartet and the Modigliani Quartet.
Sachse appears regularly at major festivals including the Salzburg Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Spannungen Festival, Moritzburg Festival, Schwetzingen SWR Festival and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. She has performed in many of Europe’s leading venues. These include Wigmore Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus, Rudolfinum, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Berlin Philharmonie.
Known for her curiosity across styles, Sachse often incorporates historically informed elements such as gut strings and period bows. She works closely with contemporary composers including Widmann, Pēteris Vasks, Christian Jost and Kit Armstrong. Her recordings span repertoire from Schumann, Brahms, Shostakovich and Hindemith to first recordings such as Jost’s Hamlet Echoes. They have received critical acclaim and were twice long-listed for the German Record Critics’ Award.
After several years as solo violist of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin she also appeared as a guest with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic. Today she combines performing with teaching. Since 2023 she has served as professor of viola at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig, following earlier professorships in Dresden and Lübeck. Sachse performs on a historic 1610 viola by Paolo Maggini as well as a modern instrument by Patrick Robin.
