Mosaic tiles require a perfectly smooth surface. Here’s why and how to prep it right:
The problem: Mosaic comes on a flexible mesh backing that conforms to whatever surface it’s placed on. Any bumps, dips, or rough spots in your concrete will transfer directly to the finished tile, creating an uneven look.
The solution: Level the substrate first using a fast-drying self-leveling compound.
Quick prep steps:
• Clean the concrete thoroughly (no dust or debris)
• Check for major low spots or high points
• Apply self-leveling product with a trowel
• Work quickly - these products set fast
• Let it cure completely before tile installation
Pro tip: For larger format tiles like 12x24, you can get away with minor imperfections since thinset will fill small voids. But with mosaic, every defect shows through.
This extra step takes 30 minutes but saves you from a wavy, unprofessional finish that’s expensive to fix later.
