In this video, I travel deep into the Sahara Desert to explore Siwa Oasis Egypt — one of the most isolated and mysterious towns in the country. We walk through the ancient Tomb of the Dead, climb the legendary Shali Fortress, swim in Cleopatra’s Pool, and finish the day with a proper Egyptian mixed grill feast.

No pyramids. No tourist buses. Just desert, history, and stories.

I start my journey in the heart of Siwa, a remote Berber town near the Libyan border. Rising from the sand is the ancient hill of the dead — the Tomb of the Dead, also known as Gebel al-Mawta. Inside these 26th Dynasty tombs, you can still see faded hieroglyphics carved over 2,500 years ago. Standing alone inside these chambers feels like stepping directly into ancient Egypt.

Then we climb the crumbling walls of Shali Fortress, also called the Shali Citadel. Built in the 13th century, this fortress was constructed from kershef — a fascinating mixture of mud, salt, and clay taken straight from the oasis itself. After heavy rains in 1926, much of it melted back into the earth, leaving behind haunting ruins that dominate the skyline.

From the top? Endless palm groves. Salt lakes shimmering in the sun. The vast Sahara stretching in every direction.

Next stop: Cleopatra’s Pool — a crystal-clear natural spring where legend says Cleopatra herself once bathed. Whether she actually did or not… the water is refreshingly cold and surprisingly deep.

To end the day properly, we sit down for a traditional Egyptian mixed grill: kofta, kebab, grilled chicken, fresh bread, tahini, and salads — eaten the only correct way, with your hands.

But what makes Siwa truly fascinating isn’t just the views or the ruins — it’s the history. This oasis was once a major stop on ancient trade routes. Even Alexander the Great famously visited Siwa to consult the Oracle of Amun.

Siwa Oasis is Egypt beyond the pyramids. Raw. Quiet. Forgotten.
