This is our Princess Shuttle ride from Ted Stevens Airport in Anchorage to the Star Princess in Whittier before our 7-day Southbound cruise ending in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

(In the video, I refer to the airport as the Ted Williams airport, not Ted Stevens Airport. I guess I've been to Boston a few too many times and was somehow mixed up with the Ted Williams Tunnel that leads to Boston and the Logan Airport there - whew).

0:17 - Flying out of Salt Lake City to Anchorage - we were upgraded to First Class!
1:04 - Landing in Anchorage at 11:30 at night. It's still very light out!
1:30 - We have family in Anchorage who picked us up at our hotel, took us to breakfast at Kava's, gave us a short tour of Anchorage and Earthquake Park, then dropped us back at the airport.
2:06 - Leaving the airport heading down the Seward Highway, thru Portage. Driving along the bay of glacial silt of Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet.

If you have the luxury of time, you can add a 3-10 days on with CruiseTour options thru your cruise line, which bring you to the ship by train or bus, or add as many days as you'd like thru an independent company, or on your own. There are also shuttle options that include a single day tour and then a drop-off at the cruise ship. You can actually rent a car or hire a taxi, but we felt, Again, for simplicity and the need for as few days away as possible, we opted for the cruise line direct shuttle. One of the biggest draws for us is the fact that once you meet up with the Princess people at the airport baggage claim area, you hand them your luggage and you don’t have to worry about any of it again. They handle it from there, transporting it to the ship, loading it onto the ship, sorting it and then It will show up in your stateroom. Just one more way for you to totally relax and enjoy your vacation.

Now, as we have always done, we flew in the night before. We do this from the standpoint of, even though our flight is booked thru the cruise line and they promise to get you to the ship, we want to allow for any contingencies or disruptions, especially the all-too-familiar cancelled or delayed flight. This is a vacation and we feel that by planning for issues that may arise, first, we can relax abit more and worry less all around, and then if the issues arise, we basically have a plan of action in place that we follow, again for less worry and hassle.

So, we booked a night in the local Hampton Inn. We are in Hiltons Hhonors program, so we get points with each stay, and with enough points, we get free nights. Another nice thing that Hilton does, is you can book a stay with a combination of payment and points, so basically, you can get a discount on your room by using some of your points. We've done that a number of times, but this room, even though the market is limited in Anchorage, we felt was not out of line, not too expensive, so we just booked the room and pocketed the points.

The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, often called the Whittier Tunnel after the town at its eastern terminus, is a dual-use ("bimodal") highway and railroad tunnel that passes under Maynard Mountain. At a length of 13,300 ft (4,100 m),At about 2.5 miles it is the second-longest highway tunnel and longest combined rail and highway tunnel in North America. The tunnel originated as a rail-only tunnel excavated in 1941-42. The tunnel was upgraded to bimodal use by the Kiewit Construction Company between September 1998 and mid-summer 2000.[13][14]
