"Die lustige Witwe" is an operetta in three acts by Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The piece is based on a libretto by Victor Léon and Leo Stein. The premiere was conducted by Lehár himself at the "Theater an der Wien" (also known as "the new opera house") in Vienna on December 30, 1905. "Die lustige Witwe" was by far Lehárs most popular operetta, having been performed over 300.000 times in the years between 1905 and 1948 alone.
This big impact and immense popularity at the time can be attributed to the clever and direct writing of the libretto, but also the music with novel orchestration and modern touches. The Sujet builds upon a strong female lead, current politics of the time, and cultural aspects of Europe, which make it not only an internationally but also historically relevant piece of art today.
