How much does it actually cost to retire comfortably in Australia?
In this video, Melanie Davies, a licensed, independent financial adviser, walks you through the latest retirement cost benchmarks published by the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and explains what they mean for everyday Australians planning their retirement.
These figures are updated regularly and give a useful guide to what retirees typically spend on housing, food, utilities, transport, insurance and lifestyle expenses.
According to the most recent data, as a minimum:
• A couple needs around $76,500 per year for a comfortable retirement
• A single person needs around $54,200 per year
These estimates assume you own your home and cover everyday living costs including food, utilities, insurance, transport and digital services like mobile phones and internet.
But the report also highlights something important:
Retirement costs are continuing to rise — particularly for essentials like health insurance, food and energy.
That means retirement planning is not just about reaching a big superannuation balance.
It’s also about having a clear understanding of your cashflow and making sure the money coming in can support the lifestyle you want over time.
In this video Melanie explains:
• What the Retirement Standard actually measures
• What a comfortable retirement lifestyle includes
• Why budgeting becomes more important in retirement
• The approximate superannuation balances often used as a guide
As a rough benchmark:
• Singles aiming for a comfortable retirement may need around $630k–$640k in super
• Couples may need around $730k–$760k combined
These figures will continue to change as living costs rise, which is why reviewing your plans regularly is important.
