This video shows one way to avoid momentary oil starvation on start-up after changing the oil when not pre-filling the oil filter. When the oil filter is horizontal and difficult to access (or upside-down vertical, as in some cases), prefilling it is not really practical. As a side note, a REAL dry-start can only occur when the engine is first put together or after a complete rebuild. Hence the quotation marks in the title.
