Lungern is the highest village (2,460 ft above sea level) in the Sarneraa Valley and a last stop before the Brünig Pass. It is a municipality in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. It encompasses Lake Lungern and immediately catches the eye with its traditional townscape. Since the bypass road has been open, the mountain village has been relieved of through traffic and is very charming.
Interlaken and Lucerne are the nearby big cities. So, you can reach Lungern from both by train. Train journey takes approx. 1 hr from Interlaken and 45 minutes from Lucerne. By road this will be close to 40 minutes.
The peninsula on Lake Lungern is a cozy place overlooking the green-blue waters and beautiful mountains. This emerald green lake with drinking water quality has bathing opportunities such as the small seaside resort of Lungern with a fine sandy beach and a long water slide. It has a a small entrance fee like adults CHF 5 and children CHF 4. The sandpit, table football, table tennis, 56 m long water slide and diving tower is a big hit for the kids. Parking is free. This lake is very much popular with cyclists, fishermen, sailors and surfers. Bikes can be rented at Lungern train station.
There are several hiking trails in the area, leading through flower-filled meadows, like the Brünig Safari walk or Butterfly trail. An easy and obvious walk is around the lake, which is about 9 km. If you want to see the lake from above, you can take the Lungern – Turren cable car up. Turren is the start of many hiking trails e.g., Schönbüel or Briezer Rothorn.
Two most iconic places to visit in Lungern is the Dundelbach Falls and the Römisch-Katholische Church. Dundelbach is a spectacular multi-level waterfall, especially when the snow melts or after a long rain. They are easily accessible by car or on foot by car. And the Church is perhaps the most beautiful one in Switzerland.
Lungern is just like a paradise on earth and waiting for your footsteps.
