Deuteronomy 18:1–22 — Brief Description
Deuteronomy 18 outlines God’s provision for Israel’s priests and His standards for spiritual leadership. The Levites, who have no land inheritance, are to receive their support from the offerings of the people. Israel is warned not to imitate the occult practices of the surrounding nations—such as divination, sorcery, or consulting the dead—because these things are detestable to God. Instead of seeking guidance through forbidden means, God promises to raise up a prophet from among the Israelites, someone like Moses, who will speak His words faithfully. The people must listen to this prophet, and God will hold them accountable for their response. The chapter ends by explaining how to recognize a true prophet: if someone speaks in God’s name but their message does not come to pass or contradicts God’s commands, that prophet has spoken presumptuously and should not be feared.
