Senior Congress leader Bhupen Borah has resigned from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 22. The news came on February 17, just weeks before the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

Borah, who served as APCC president from 2021 to 2025, said his decision was linked to issues of self-respect and dissatisfaction with the functioning of the state unit. His resignation briefly appeared to be reconsidered after discussions with party leaders and a phone call with Rahul Gandhi, but within 24 hours he confirmed his exit.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the move and said Borah would be joining the BJP formally. The development comes at a time when the Congress is trying to strengthen its position in the state after consecutive electoral setbacks.

Borah has been associated with the Congress for over three decades and has served as a two-time MLA from Bihpuria. His exit is likely to have organisational and political implications for the party in Assam.
