Launched at the 1973 Frankfurt Auto Show, the BMW 2002 Turbo was a landmark vehicle: the first series-production European car to feature a turbocharged engine. This high-performance variant of the "New Class" sedan was developed to homologate the 2002 for Group 2 racing circuits. Its aggressive appearance—white paintwork, Motorsports livery stripes, wider fenders, and a prominent front air dam with mirrored "2002 turbo" decals (designed to be read correctly in the rearview mirror of the car it was overtaking)—cemented its raw, street-racing image. Despite a brief production run due to the 1973 oil crisis, it produced an impressive 170 horsepower from its 2.0L engine and paved the way for all future BMW performance models.
