Factory finishes on click-lock cork planks eventually wear out and need a refinishing touch, just like hardwood floors.
The fact is that glue-down cork tiles on your floors must be sealed immediately to keep moisture from seeping through the seams and getting damaged due to water.
Here are three types of sealants that work best for cork flooring:
1- Polyurethane 0:29
Applying a quality water-based polyurethane at least four times to the unfinished cork or once to the pre-finished cork after installation will create a clear seal over natural cork tiles. This will make them nearly impervious to damage from water and stains.
Unlike oil-based polyurethane, the water-based variety will not amber over time and will keep your cork floors looking newer for longer. Also, the water-based version is quicker to dry and emits fewer fumes, so it's comparatively safer.
2- Acrylic Urethane 1:02
Acrylic finishes are water-based and relatively easy to apply, but multiple layers (up to four) may be necessary to provide complete protection from wear and tear.
The acrylic finish is applied in thinly layered coats that eventually harden to form a protective surface, and you might see this type of sealant on factory-sealed click-lock flooring planks.
The good news is that the individual coats only take one or two hours to dry, so you can probably get the job done in a single day. Plus, unlike oil-based polyurethane products, acrylic finishes won't yellow over time.
3- Wood Wax 1:39
Wax was once a popular finish, especially for wood floors. If your cork floor is older, it may be sealed with wax that needs to be reapplied every six months to a year.
You have to put the wax on by hand and then buff it in, which can be time-consuming. For the same reason - some DIYers prefer to sand the cork first to apply a regular polyurethane sealer coat instead.
And that's the end of the story! Remember that whichever sealant you choose, make sure it's specifically designed for cork flooring and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results.
