What should you do if you make a mistake?

Okay, easier said than done, right? It's normal for us to feel paralyzed by our intrusive and negative thoughts whenever we mess up a difficult (or sometimes even an easy) passage. I used to feel so stressed before my performances, because I was trying to be perfect. One day, it dawned on me that there is no space for perfection in our humanity, because then we wouldn't be human. So, instead, I started searching for excellence in my interpretations. And, what does excellence mean to me? Accepting my humanity, my mistakes, my flaws, my achievements, my attributes, all of it, and sharing all of that with the audience. Music, then, becomes a way for me to share an aspect of my emotionality, of my humanity, with the audience, and for me to receive their humanity, as well. And, thus, I learned to accept my mistakes and become a better musician because of it.

Vale, más fácil decirlo que hacerlo, ¿verdad? Es normal sentirnos paralizados por nuestros pensamientos intrusivos y negativos cada vez que cometemos un error en un pasaje difícil (o incluso a veces en uno fácil). Solía sentirme muy estresado antes de mis actuaciones porque intentaba ser perfecto. Un día, me di cuenta de que no hay cabe la perfección dentro de nuestra humanidad, porque entonces no seríamos humanos. Así que, en cambio, comencé a buscar la excelencia en mis interpretaciones. Y, ¿qué significa la excelencia para mí? Aceptar mi humanidad, mis errores, mis defectos, mis logros, mis atributos, todo lo que me identifica, y compartirlo con el público. La música, entonces, se convirtió en una forma de compartir un aspecto de mi emotividad, de mi humanidad, con el público, y en una manera de recibir su humanidad también. Y, así, aprendí a aceptar mis errores y a ser un mejor músico por ello.
