Not only did I see my family, but my friends too. Did I see? That's a question, but this is not a question. So why do we do this? Why do we put a question in the middle of a normal sentence? And how can and this structure make your English more expressive, impressive and dramatic? Let's find out.

So you want an advanced level of English to pass an exam or simply just to have that WOW! Factor to your English, but you don't know which topics of grammar to study to reach that level? Well, this is exactly the type of grammar you need if you want that impressive advanced level of English. It is complicated, but with the trick I'm going to teach you in today's lesson, it's going to be really, really simple. So first, before I can teach you about inversion, we first need to have a little look about how to construct questions in English. So if you are an absolute master of questions, then you can go ahead to that time in the video.

[4:06] Now, when we're talking about inversion in this context, in English, we're talking about the structure we need when we're using expressions like these. Not only. Only later. Only by. Only in this way. Only then. No sooner. Never. Nowhere on earth. In no way and on no account. There are more, but they are some of the most common expressions that we use when we're using this inversion structure. So, simply put, if you want to use inversion in English, you want to start the sentence with one of these expressions and then use the structure of a question that we looked at earlier in today's lesson.

So to see this in action, and to give you some context and examples, we're going to use a real experience of mine from this summer. I bought a ticket to go to England to visit my family and friends. But then I realised that my passport was not valid. So I drove 7 hours to Madrid and 7 hours back. Only in this way could I get a new passport. Only in this way, so that's the expression, could I get a passport. Could I get. That is the structure of a sentence. I could get is the affirmative. Could I get? Is the question. And we use that after this expression to make a sentence using inversion. Now, it's not a question, so don't use the intonation of a question like, could I get a passport? No, it's a normal sentence, not a question. So it's only in this way could I get a passport.

Only then did I get excited about going to England. Only then, that's your expression at the beginning. And then did I get that's the structure of a question did I get excited about going to England. No sooner had I arrived than it started to rain. No sooner that's your expression Had I arrived that's the question structure than it started to rain. Yes, than is correct. It always seems strange to me, but that's the word we use in this structure.

Okay, let's have a look at a few more examples before I tell you a different way that we can use this. And I'll also explain why we do this a little bit later in the lesson. OK? Not only did I see my family, but I saw my friends too. This is a really common expression. Not only ... But ... And we need inversion in the first part of this sentence. Not only did I see my family, but I saw my friends too.
