Let's dye some sheets to make new fabric using shibori techniques! #shibori #diy
Why buy new fabric for projects when you can dye your own? I needed new fabric to cover yoga bolsters, so I used old sheets and dyed them with the Shibori pole technique called Arashi. It’s messy, but it’s worth it!
Here's what you need: you can buy supplies here.
Bucket or sink
Gloves
Pole - I used metal ones - PVC works well here
Lots of tarps, paper towels, etc.
Rit Dye for Cotton
Fabric - old sheets, muslin, etc. Make sure they’re cotton, or you’ll need the Rit synthetic dye. I used 100% cotton twin-size sheets.
1 cup of Salt
1 Tsp Dawn Soap
A bunch of rubber bands
A pole to wrap your fabric around
Rit Dye Fixative
I suggest following the Rit instructions here, but here’s my walk-through:
1. Make sure your sheets or fabric are clean and laundered. If they’re all clean, wet them slightly. You want it damp.
2. Put down tarps, and wear gloves (don’t make my mistakes).
3. Take the damp fabric and make your desired pattern - I tried to do the fan fold so it’s like a rectangle.
4. Secure one end to the top of the pole using a band and start wrapping it around the pole, and try not to overlap, or those pieces won’t get colour.
5. Once the fabric is wrapped, secure it with another rubber band and scrunch it up. You can add more elastics for more effect.
6. Fill your sink or bucket with hot water and add 1 cup of salt (I use sea salt that I grind to a fine texture) and 1 tsp of dish soap (I use Dawn). - Note: I used way too much soap, but I like the cloudy effect.
7. Rit says to use one liquid bottle or two powder packages per two pounds of fabric - I used a mix of colors for about that.
8. My pole was too big, so I used a cup to pour the dye bath over the exposed part and then switched the pole around to get all the areas. I did about an hour worth of sitting my fabric in the dye - you can do less for a less intense colour.
9. Remove the fabric from the dye bath, drain the dye, but do not remove the fabric from the pole.
10. I used dye fixative by filling the sink with warm water and the fixative, stirring the fabric slowly and pouring it over the pole for about half an hour. More instructions can be found here.
11. Drain the fixative and use cool water to rinse the pole and slowly unfurl it.
12. Rinse until the water is clear, then throw it in the wash - I use the eco warm function and add vinegar in the rinse cycle to set the fabric.
13. Dry on low heat and voila! New upcycled fabric in a custom print!
