Fourier is bidding farewell to its first-generation humanoid robot.
The Shanghai-based robotics firm just released the specs for its second-generation AI robot, the GR-2. The GR-2 brings notable improvements in both power and dexterity. Its 380 newton meters (N.m) of torque allow it to handle physically demanding tasks, such as lifting patients into wheelchairs, moving heavy furniture, and operating industrial tools. This amount of torque provides it with a higher capacity for assisting in healthcare or performing labor-intensive activities.
The GR-2 also features 53 degrees of freedom, with 12 in its hands alone, making it capable of performing precise manipulation tasks. This dexterity is comparable to NASA's Robonaut R2, which was designed for precision tasks in space.
One practical improvement is the inclusion of a swappable battery that offers a runtime of up to two hours. This feature increases the robot's operational flexibility, allowing it to work longer with minimal interruptions for recharging, a necessity in busy environments.
The GR-2 is also designed to be developer-friendly, supporting open-source software like ROS (Robot Operating System) and NVIDIA's Isaac Lab, which enables customization and further development. This allows research teams and industry developers to program specific tasks or improve the robot's learning algorithms based on their needs.
With these enhancements, the GR-2 moves beyond the prototype stage, positioning itself as a more capable and adaptable solution in fields like healthcare and manufacturing, where strength, precision, and flexibility are required.
