Santarém ( AFI : [sɐ̃taˈɾẽj] ) is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Pará , the third most populous in the state , behind only the capital, Belém and Ananindeua , being the main urban , financial , commercial and cultural center in the west of the state.

It is the seat of the Metropolitan Region of Santarém , the second largest urban agglomeration in Pará. It belongs to the Lower Amazon mesoregion and the microregion of the same name . It is located at the confluence of the Tapajós and Amazon rivers . Located about 800 km from the metropolises of the Amazon ( Manaus and Belém), it was poetically known as the "Pearl of Tapajós" .

In 2021, its population was estimated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) at 308,339 inhabitants, making it the third most populous municipality in Pará, the eighth most populous in the North Region, and the 91st most populous municipality in Brazil. [ 3 ] It occupies an area of ​​22,887,080 km², of which 97 km² are in the urban perimeter . [ 6 ]

Founded on June 22, 1661 , it is one of the oldest cities in the Amazon region. In 1758 it was elevated to town status and almost a century later, as a result of its notable development, it was elevated to city status on October 24 , 1848 . [ 7 ] [ 8 ] It is included in the plan of historic cities in Brazil , being one of the oldest and culturally significant cities in Pará.

Because of the crystalline waters of the Tapajós River, it has more than 100 kilometers of beaches that are more like the sea. This is the case of Alter do Chão, known as the " Brazilian Caribbean " and chosen by the English newspaper The Guardian as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil and the most beautiful freshwater beach in the world. There is the stage of one of the biggest folklore events in the region, Çairé, which attracts tourists from all over the world. [ 9 ] According to 2017 data, it boasts a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of R$ 4.8 billion, [ 5 ] being the sixth municipality with the highest GDP in the state.
