Several journalists and content creators in India, primarily those engaged in investigative reporting and social commentary, have been murdered or died in suspicious circumstances after exposing various forms of corruption or criticizing the government, though a direct, widely accepted link between their content and government-orchestrated death is often legally contested and difficult to prove.
Here are some notable cases of individuals who were critical of powerful entities, including government-related projects, and subsequently died:
Gauri Lankesh (2017): A prominent journalist, writer, and activist known for her strong left-leaning and anti-establishment views and criticism of right-wing extremism, was fatally shot outside her home in Bengaluru.
Mukesh Chandrakar (2025): A freelance journalist who ran the YouTube channel "Bastar Junction," was murdered in Chhattisgarh. He had exposed alleged corruption and irregularities in a road construction project, which prompted a government inquiry. The main accused in his murder was a contractor involved in the project, who was also his cousin.
Rajeev Pratap (2025): A freelance journalist known for working on issues surrounding corruption and government mismanagement, his body was found in the Bhagirathi River in Uttarakhand after being missing for ten days.
Other journalists: The list of journalists killed in India is extensive, with many having been murdered for their reporting on sensitive issues like the "sand mafia," Naxal activities, and other corruption cases involving powerful people or organizations.
These tragic incidents highlight the dangers faced by journalists and content creators who report on corruption and critical sociopolitical issues in India.
