Medical Education in India need a revamp.
It is not realistic and up to the demand of time
While number of private medical colleges have come up but still majority (50 to 55 %) are still in Government Sector. In many Government colleges, many a times Professors are absent or some time even it they come to class, they are not well prepared. Situation is better in many reputed colleges in metro or capital cities , but so is not the case in many other Government run Colleges. While India has world class doctors, but its health management is still bureaucratic & rigid.
India need lot of foreign exchange (current account deficit has put Govt in trouble) and medical tourism can help in creating such infrastructure (which will also give Indians world class care) & earn dollars to elevate basic infrastructure in our rural .
India need Doctors in rural which is not just possible by increasing MBBS seats or making compulsory rural posting .Once basic amenities are there Doctor will be more than willing to go (Happy to help you in villages).Even candidates coming from rural areas after getting degree do not go back to rural areas or even their home town which is in a rural area.
Everybody in India is looking for better lifestyle. India cannot overtake china unless our private sector is given impetus including medical education. Why not encourage foreign universities like Harward, Oxford to set up colleges in India. When colleges like in Manipal are working on commercial lines then what is the harm in bringing and allowing foreign universities to set up shop in India. At least we will save precious foreign exchange. Most important any student getting seat in private college , his parent must declare their PAN CARD NUMBER ( so that black money is not diverted). But private sector need lot of regulation just like Telecom Regulatory & IRDA (insurance regulatory development authority). Medical insurance industry as of 2012 is worth Rupee 30,000 crores which suggests that private hospitals are flourishing and people have faith in them. India has reaped tremendous benefit in telecom sector by privatizing. Regulating private sector and development of the country is a continuous affair & need political vision, maturity & determination. RUSSIA, CHINA, CUBE HAVE ADOPTED PRIVATIZATION SO HAS INDIA. SPEED OF REFORMS IN INDIA IS SLOW.
