Join us as we spend 1,789 seconds with former Hoya basketball star, Gene Smith (C’84). Hailed as the best individual lockdown defender in the history of the Big East, Gene Smith is a name familiar to most Hoyas given his prowess on the basketball court. Part of the victorious NCAA Championship team of 1984, Smith played with Patrick Ewing (C’85, P’08, ‘17) and other household names. After leaving the Hilltop, Smith was selected to try out for the U.S. Olympic Team twice, touring Europe on the path to the Seoul 1988 summer games. He ultimately went on to build a successful career at Nike, fueling sales, consumer marketing outreach, and brand development for 20+ years. In 2008 he spearheaded a marketing strategy for Brand Jordan’s Future Designer Sole Program that reached over 400,000 of New York City’s youth. Driven by his passion to give back and inspired by Coach John Thompson Jr.’s legacy, Smith started Hoya Locker Room, a webcast series featuring Hoyas sharing their experiences on and off the Hilltop, and discussing issues related to current events.
