Elizabeth Economy and Sheila Smith, Council on Foreign Relations senior fellows, provide an overview of “Dispute in the East China Sea”—a scenario from CFR Education Smith lays out a basic understanding of the dispute, highlighting the East China Sea as a maritime boundary for four East Asian nations: China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. However as evidenced by current headlines, the East China Sea is most often thought of in the context of the bilateral dispute between Japan and China over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands. Economy notes that Japan administers the disputed islands, but that sovereignty over the area is unclear. This is important because, according to international law, the nation that has sovereignty is entitled to develop potentially valuable resources within the islands’ 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The United States recognizes that China will assert its interests in new ways as it grows and becomes more powerful, says Economy, but seeks to ensure that it does so in a responsible manner. Smith says she is hopeful that the dispute over the islands can be resolved through diplomacy, adding that “we are watching, we are waiting, we are trying to determine” how China’s rise will affect other nations.
