With over 221,752 IDPs in Adamawa State alone (mostly from
the Michika and Madagali Local Government Areas and
Borno State), scattered across host communities and
informal camp-like settings, the situation in Nigeria's
Northeast is dire. The displaced population comprises of IDPs,
refugee returnees from neighbouring countries, and IDP
returnees, most of whom face harsh living conditions and the
the potential risk of eviction.
Through this project, UNHCR is supporting IDPs, IDP
returnees and spontaneous refugee returnees that have
returned to Adamawa from Cameroon, as well as host
communities. As of June 2022, Girei Local Government Area
(LGA) had an estimated population of 129,995, of which
approximately 15,000 are IDPs, hosted either in informal
settlements or host communities, this gives Girei LGA the
third largest population of IDPs in Adamawa State.
The project aims to create sustainable solutions that meet
the needs of the affected population. It prioritizes
accountability to affected people by placing affected
communities at the center of planning, implementation, and
monitoring.
