QATEEL SHIFAI

Qateel Shifai, whose original name was Aurangzeb Khan, was born on December 24, 1919, in Haripur, Hazara. He stands tall as one of the best in the world of Urdu poetry. Life dealt him a harsh blow with his father’s passing in 1935, forcing him to abandon his education and try his hand at small businesses before finding his true calling in poetry. Without any family tradition of sher-o-shayari, Qateel’s poetic journey began under the guidance of Hakeem Yahya Shifa Khanpuri, whose name inspired part of his takhallus (pen name), Shifai. Later, he became a disciple of Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi. Known for his lyrical ghazal and romantic geet, Qateel’s art is evident even in his nazm. Rising from his struggle as a lyricist in Lahore's film industry, he published 14 books, including Haryali, Guftugoo, Mutriba and Bargad. Qateel passed away in 2001, but his words live on to touch the hearts of readers and lovers of Urdu literature.

halat ke qadmon pe qalandar nahin girta
TuuTe bhi jo tara to zamin par nahin girta

A Qalandar does not bow before circumstances.
Even when a star falls, it never touches the ground.

girte hain samundar mein bade shauq se dariya
lekin kisi dariya mein samundar nahin girta

Rivers willingly merge into the sea,
But the sea never dissolves into a river.

samjho wahan phaldar shajar koi nahin hai
wo sahn ki jis mein koi patthar nahin girta

Know that no fruitful tree exists there
Where no stone falls into the courtyard.

itna to hua faida barish ki kami ka
is shahr mein ab koi phisal kar nahin girta

One benefit of the rain's absence is this:
In this city, no one slips and falls anymore.

in'aam ke lalach mein likhe mad'h kisi ki
itna to kabhi koi sukhan-var nahin girta

No true poet stoops to praise for reward,
For greed has no place in genuine art.

hairan hai kai roz se thahra hua pani
talab mein ab kyun koi kankar nahin girta

The stagnant pond wonders in silence:
Why no pebble disturbs its stillness anymore.

us banda-e-khuddar pe nabiyon ka hai saaya
jo bhook mein bhi luqma-e-tar par nahin girta

The prophets’ shadow shelters the self-respecting one
Who, even in hunger, does not fall for a morsel.

karna hai jo sar ma'rka-e-zist to sun le
be-bazu-e-haidar dar-e-khaibar nahin girta

If you aim to conquer life’s battlefield, know this:
Without Haider’s (Hazrat Ali’s) arm, the gate of Khyber won’t fall.

qaim hai 'qatil' ab ye mere sar ke sutoon par
bhonchal bhi aaye to mera ghar nahin girta

O Qateel, my house now stands on firm pillars.
Even an earthquake cannot bring it down.
