The emergence and explosive growth of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools is exposing new questions about web-scale discovery and the mechanisms for delivering research to library users. The Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) wanted to gain better insight into the hopes and fears of ODI's constituencies as these groups explore opportunities of Generative AI. This talk is based on a 2025 white paper about Generative AI tools as they receive wider adoption. Librarians who subscribe to discovery services and the content providers that contribute to them have different expectations and concerns about what GenAI will do to traditional library discovery. Through this session, attendees will develop a deeper understanding of the contrasting hopes and concerns about artificial intelligence across libraries and content providers.
As Generative AI is adopted across library databases and discovery platforms, transparency is ever more important. Presenters, representing libraries and content providers, will share survey methodology, findings, and recommendations. We will discuss the differences and similarities between our constituencies and discuss what they mean for future directions of ODI and for web-scale discovery.
ODI manages a NISO Recommended Practice to increase transparency across web-scale library discovery’s constituencies: libraries, content providers, and discovery providers.
