I did a quick comparison of the high ISO performance of these cameras. Settings for both were as close as I could get them: log3 recording, 10bit 422, 4k 24fps, used ISO 3200/6400/12800/25600, over-exposed 2 stops and brought back in post, rec709 conversion in Davinci, promaster hgx prime variable nd filters used. The R8 had the RF 24mm 1.8, and the ZV-E1 had the 20mm 1.8 G attached; both were at 1.8 and exposed for via vnd. Canon was using canon cinema gamut and clog3, and Sony was using sgamut 3 and slog3. No adjustments were made in post except for the log to rec709 conversion - especially not noise reduction! I do believe the R8 desaturates the image a little but is still more accurate (at least in this scenario).
It's hard to tell since you haven't been in my house, but the Canon has more accurate auto white balance based on the color of the walls and how my skin would have looked; I was in a room with all lights turned off, and the sunlight was shining through the windows from across the room. I was surprised at how close they matched up as far as high ISO performance. Let me know which one you think is better and WHY!
