Schlegel's chain-tailed botrops (Bothriechis schlegelii) is a venomous snake that lives in trees in the tropical forests of Central and South America. The body length of adults is 50-65 cm. Sexual dimorphism: females are larger. The head is short, wide, with large eyes and vertical pupils. Above the eyes are short horns. The tail is moderately long and prehensile.
The skin is green with a honeycomb pattern of narrow red-brown stripes, a light red tip of the tail. Coloration may vary. It lives in the tropical forests of Central and South America at an altitude of up to 2650 m above sea level.
It is active at night and deftly climbs the branches in search of prey: small mammals, frogs, lizards and sleeping birds. Cases of cannibalism have been reported. It uses the bright tip of its tail as bait.
An ovoviviparous snake with a gestation period of 4-5 months. The female gives birth to 2-20 cubs 10-20 cm long.
