Sono 433 gli abitanti di Linosa, piccola isola al centro del Mediterraneo grande poco più di 5 chilometri quadrati.
Un vulcano spento, terra aspra e selvaggia che profuma d’Africa.
La vita segue le leggi della natura e scorre lenta come se appartenesse ad un altro tempo.
Una comunità in un giorno di festa, culto antico e preghiera autentica per la Protettrice dell’isola, Maria Stella del Mare.

Per caso mi sono trovato lì quella domenica di luglio e con la mia fedele telecamera, privo di altra attrezzatura e senza la mia troupe, ho deciso di documentare questi momenti di estrema autenticità umana.
Mi affascina come su un piccolo e sperduto granello di terra in mezzo al mare, possa esserci una società così completa, con i suoi equilibri e con il suo divenire, sospesa tra il presente ed un epoca indefinita.

“Matri” vuole essere un semplice documento, una testimonianza di verità, una raccolta di immagini e suoni che racconta di un “piccolo popolo”. Una comunità spesso dimenticata, inerme al volere della natura e che pur resiste e vive in armonia con tutto e con niente.

With 433 inhabitants, Linosa is a small island in the center of the Mediterranean Sea just over 5 square kilometers in size.
An extinct volcano, a rugged and wild land that smells like Africa.
Life follows the laws of nature and flows slowly as if it belonged to another time.
A community on a day of celebration, ancient worship and authentic prayers for the protector of the island, Maria Stella del Mare.

By accident I found myself there in a July Sunday and with my faithful camera, without other equipment or my crew, I decided to document these extreme human authenticity's moments.
It fascinates me how on a small and lost grain of land in the middle of the sea, there can be such a complete society, with its equilibrium and its becoming, suspended between the present and an indefinite era.

"Matri" wants to be a simple documentary, a testimony of truth, a collection of images and sounds that tells of a "small people". A comunity often forgotten and defenseless in front of the nature's will but able to resist and to live in harmony with everything and nothing.
