A paddy rice planter, more commonly known as a rice transplanter, is a specialized agricultural machine used to efficiently transplant rice seedlings into paddy fields. These machines automate the labor-intensive process of manual transplanting, saving time and increasing productivity. 

Types of rice transplanters

Rice transplanters are available in a range of sizes and operational types to suit different farm scales. 

Manual: A hand-cranked or push-type transplanter for small to medium-sized fields. It can plant two to four rows at a time and significantly reduces labor compared to planting by hand.

Walk-behind: A self-propelled, engine-operated machine that an operator guides from behind. These are faster and more powerful than manual models, with some planting up to six rows at once.

Ride-on: A larger, engine-operated machine that an operator drives, similar to a small tractor. These are the most efficient, capable of planting six to eight rows in a single pass, and are suitable for large-scale operations.

How a transplanter works

Seedling tray shifter: A mechanism that moves the seedling tray like a typewriter carriage, positioning the seedlings for planting.

Pickup forks: Plural forks that pick up a clump of seedlings from the tray and transplant them into the muddy field.

PR-126 is a popular, short-duration paddy (rice) variety developed by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Released in 2016, it has become widely cultivated in Punjab, Haryana, and other parts of India due to its water efficiency, shorter growth cycle, and high yield.



Pusa-44 is a long-duration, high-yield rice variety that was developed in 1993 by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). Due to its negative environmental impacts, particularly heavy water consumption and its connection to stubble burning, it has been banned in Punjab, though enforcement remains challenging.
