PROGRAM NOTES
Trio in C Minor, Op. 29 “La Danza della Morte” (The Dance with Death) is a one-movement work for flexible instrumentation, originally for flute, horn, and bassoon. The figure of Death threads its presence through the music, subtly guiding the piece's journey. The opening lyrical, unaccompanied melody establishes a shadowy tone before the music is propelled into an intensified, ever-shifting landscape of textures. Melodies and motifs reappear throughout the work in progressively intensifying forms. This trio reflects a longstanding tradition in “dance with death” imagery, where moments of vitality emerge even in the shadow of the inevitable.
