Come see the accessories I add to my mountain bike as I convert it into the ultimate commuter.
Eventually I'll electrify my bike to get further, faster. For now though, this suits me and gives an entirely different perspective of my city than a car ever could. I learn where things are as I navigate through less-used paths and shortcuts. Plus, to bike in a city you need to stay vigilant. This means you pay attention to your surroundings and learn where everything is laid out. I highly recommend bike commuting to anyone who doesn't mind breaking a bit of a sweat in the morning.
I kitted my bike out with these parts over several months. You absolutely do not need all I have here to get started. Depending on your city, you may not need certain items at all.
My must-haves:
1) Helmet.
PLEASE wear one... I've survived a 50mph motorcycle impact straight into a pickup truck because I wore a full-face helmet. It's the reason why I do actually wear the full-face helmet you saw in the video during my commutes (the pads were for show, I wear those on trails). I have a brain-injured uncle who received his injury due to not wearing a helmet. For the sake of your future and your loved ones, WEAR A HELMET. Spend the money on one that looks cool and feels comfortable. I cannot stress this enough. A helmet literally saved my life. I found mine on sale for $125. I'd buy it again for $500 in a heartbeat. You cannot put a price on a healthy brain, and you only get one of them. Protect it.
2) Lights (again, safety over everything)
3) Lock
4) Bell
5) Rack/panniers or a backpack (I use either depending on what I need to haul).
The daily race can be fun, relaxing, scary, and an absolute thrill.
