This is a 4th generation dry cleaner's explanation of the different washing machine cycles. The main differences between the various cycles are the water temperatures, duration, and agitation:
1) The normal cycle is typically longer and uses a higher water temperature. I'd use this for cotton
2) The delicate cycle is shorter and uses a lower water temperature to protect fragile items as well as a much lower spin speed in extraction at the end to remove excess water. I'd use this for lightweight and lacey pieces.
3) The wrinkle free or perm press cycle is for your synthetics and is basically a happy medium between the normal and delicate. This is designed for gym clothes.
4) The quick wash cycle is obviously short and thus uses less water for lightly soiled garments. This is a great sustainable option for clothes that arent that dirty.
5) The sanitize cycle uses the highest water temperatures and extended wash times. This cycle is designed to kill bacteria, germs, and allergens.
6) The hand wash cycle is the most gentle and lowest temp. There should be very little motion during this cycle. A great choice for cashmere, just remember to dry flat on a towel.
There are others but I think these are the most important ones. Let me know if you want me to expand on this!
